Official Rules for the Game of Pididle


1. Definition: A pididle is defined as a set of lights where one is burned out, missing, or simply not working. The standard pididle is the front headlights of an automobile. In many circumstances, one light is simply dimmer than the other one. In these cases, no pididle is present. The term is called a "dimmer." A player may shout the term "dimmer" to distinguish this case; however, no points are awarded. A player who incorrectly labels a "dimmer" as a "pididle" is not penalized for his error.

2. Completion of a pididle: A pididle consists of two (2) parts. Both parts must be completed for a player to receive points. A player must first correctly shout out the name of the pididle he sees. He must also touch the roof of the vehicle. Both tasks must be finished to receive points. Failure to complete both tasks will be considered null-and-void. Therefore, if a player shouts a pididle but forgets to touch the roof, he receives no credit. The player receives an advantage though, because in the case of no pididle he is not penalized. Both the call of the pididle and the touching of the roof must be completed within three (3) seconds of each other. The shout of the correct "pididle" must be completed first.

3. Scoring: There are many different variations of the pididle, and each is worth a different amount of points. If a pididle is called incorrectly, the same amount of points is deducted up to one (1) point. Therefore, if a two (2) point pididle is called incorrectly, only one (1) point can be deducted. If an incorrect pididle is called, no points will be deducted. For a pididle to count, it must be witnessed by X amount of other players where X equals total number of players minus two (2) i.e. if two (2) people are playing, zero (0) others must witness it (2-2=0). If four (4) players are playing, two (2) others must witness it (4-2=2). If a player cannot find the correct number of witnesses the pididle does not count. No points are awarded and no points are deducted. Note: this rule cannot be claimed as an excuse to get out of point deduction.

4. Types of pididles.

a) Standard pididle: A standard pididle consists of one headlight out. The call is "pididle." It is worth one (1) point.

b) Quazi pididle: A quazi pididle is a pididle where instead of a headlight being out, one of the fog lights is out. The term "quazi-pididle" must be called. Half a point (1/2) is awarded.

c) Semi pididle: A semi pididle is a pididle where instead of a headlight being out, one of the parking lights is out. The term "semi-pididle" must be called. Half a point (1/2) is awarded.

d) Diagonal pididle: A diagonal pididle is two (2) pididles on one vehicle. One of the main headlights and the opposite side fog light must both be out. The term "diagonal pididle" must be called. Three (3) points are awarded.

e) Double pididle: A double pididle is two (2) pididles on one vehicle. One of the main headlights and the same side fog light must both be out. The term "double pididle" must be called. Four (4) points are awarded.

Note: If a diagonal or double pididle is only called as a "pididle" or "quazi-pididle" then that player receives credit for either call. However, if another player can correctly update the pididle by called "diagonal" or "double", then the second player receives the remaining points. i.e. Player A calls a "pididle". He receives one (1) point. Player B then notices a fog light out on the same vehicle. He upgrades the call to "double pididle." Player B receives the remaining three (3) points. (4 - 1 = 3)

f) Back-light pididle: A back-light pididle is a pididle where one of the brake lights on the back of the vehicle is out. The term "back-light-pididle" must be called. One point (1) is awarded.

g) Not a pididle: If a motorcycle with one headlight on is found, the term "Not a pididle" can be called. Scoring is one (1) point; however, only one may be called in a group of motorcycles. If a player incorrectly labels this as a "pididle", he is not penalized.

5. Scoring Variations.

a) Tractor-Trailer/Bus Pididle: If a standard, quazi, or semi pididle is called and it is on a tractor-trailer or a bus, double points are awarded if and only if the player receiving the points acknowledges the vehicle he is claiming points from.

b) Pididles called behind the players' vehicle: If a standard, quazi, or semi pididle is called on a vehicle that is traveling the same direction as the players' vehicle and can only be seen by looking toward the rear of the car, then double the points are awarded. Note: This rule cannot be used in conjunction with the tractor-trailer/bus rule. The points can only be doubled once.

c) The Zeon Lights Rule: This rule creates the highest amount of points. Definition: Zeon lights are headlights that are bluish in color and are brighter than others. (Thanks to Mr. Cooper for this term) When a player sees Zeon lights, he can call them. He does not need to touch the roof to receive them. When a player has Zeon lights, then the next pididle called is doubled for him and him only. After completion of the next pididle, the lights are taken away. i.e. A player has Zeon lights and calls the next pididle. He receives double the amount of points he normally would. However, if a player has Zeon lights and someone else calls a pididle, the first player loses his Zeon lights, and the other player receives the normal amount of points. Only one player may have Zeon lights at one time. If one player has Zeon lights and another calls them on another vehicle, the second player receives the Zeon lights while the first player loses them. Therefore, a player with Zeon lights must continue to call other Zeon lights to prevent competitors from taking them. If a pididle has Zeon lights, then whichever is called first will be enforced. For example, if the pididle is called, points are awarded and nobody else can claim Zeon lights. If Zeon lights are claimed, nobody can pick up points for the pididle. In that case, the player who called pididle will not be penalized.

6. Completion of the Game

Points continue to accumulate throughout the night. If stops are made during the night, points remain. Only when the night is over can the player with the most points claim victory.
